How to choose the right size celebration cake

Six inches or ten? Our quick guide to cake sizes, portions and how far ahead to order for birthdays, showers and weddings.

The question we hear most at the counter is simple: how much cake do I need? Here is the rule of thumb we use for every order.

Portions at a glance

  • 6-inch round: 8 to 10 dessert slices
  • 8-inch round: 14 to 18 slices
  • 10-inch round: 24 to 30 slices
  • Two tiers (6 + 8): 25 to 30 slices

How far ahead to order

Single-tier cakes need 48 hours. Tiered and sculpted cakes need two weeks, and wedding cakes are best booked a few months out so we can plan a tasting.

If you are torn between two sizes, go bigger. Nobody has ever complained about leftover cake.
